Description
My second entry for contest, this is for the Cultures theme. Had to draw Ameera since I didn't figure Joker would work on a roof XD
This is based from the view from our flat in Cairo. When it would rain (pretty rare) the rain would wash all the pollution away and we could see one of the Giza pyramids from the roof (we lived on the 6th floor of the flat, so the roof would be the 7th floor) and one of the Saqqara Step pyramids from the other side of the roof. We weren't this close to the pyramids (Giza was about 30 mins away) though.
I thought this was a nice blend of the hustle and bustle of the modern day Egyptian culture (or at least, the culture in Cairo, which is quite modern) and the ancient Pharaonic culture. I even gave everything the lovely brown haze that comes from being one of the most polluted city in the world XD Gotta love Cairo.
Some interesting facts:
-The city, known as Al Qahira in Arabic, means "victorious" or "triumphant"
- Cairo is the largest city in Africa
-Cairo, home of over 20 million people, is so big that it's divided into sections. We lived in Maadi, but there's also Heliopolis (and probably others that I can't remember right now. It's been 3 years since I lived there).
- When most people think of the pyramids, they think of the three Great Pyramids at Giza, but there are actually hundreds of pyramids all around Egypt.
- Unlike the tombs down in Luxor, the Great Pyramids in Giza are actually quite empty inside, as the Pharaohs were very strong in their beliefs that they were gods and didn't feel the need to flaunt it
- horseback riding around the pyramids is a very common tourist attraction, and is infact how I learned to ride
- All the houses have flat roofs (we don't get enough rain to need sloped ones!) and it's very common to be able to go out on the roof and sit around or do whatever (my brothers would play street hockey with their friends)
So, enough facts, I could probably go on all day with them XD I guess I'm a bit obsessed. Also, I know the buildings aren't quite like how they actually are in Cairo, but I really wanted the pyramids to stand out, and I wanted the buildings to seem really modern, so I made them all grey. In real life, they're usually a lot more brown.
